Project 1: Proposal

We are to study a cultural phenomenon or a particular subculture and study within a chosen theme to convey our own interpretation of the particular culture without altering the actual facts of the culture. The general theme given is "Visualism - Visual Culture".

We should produce a minimum of three preliminary ideas to visually express our interpretation of the culture we studied using design language. We are suggested to conduct the design in any digital form creatively. Each idea is to be supported by 200 words of rationale.

WEEK 1 | Ideas Proposed & Preliminary Research

WEEK 4-5 | Data Collection

In the Data Collection part, we are to collect artefacts of the visual culture we are
studying. Suggested data collection methods:
• Observation study
• Interview relevant stakeholders
• Online and/or actual physical material visual research of the selected culture (thepeople/arts/symbols/architecture/text/calligraphy etc)
Artefacts can be in any form: photos, videos, observation write-ups, physical artefacts like packaging, books, brochures etc and any related forms. Artefacts collected should have explanations or rationales to bridge the information between your proposal and your proposed final output.

Data Collection Methods:
1. Online research
My group and I collected information about the black cat culture through the Internet.

2. Google Form survey

My group and I have prepared 20 questions about black cat culture for a questionnaire and analyzed the results and answers after the questionnaire.

Questionnaire answer analysis

3.Online interview

I collected video interviews from London, the United States, Canada, Italy, France, Germany, Singapore, China, South Korea and Japan.

We collected video interviews from London, the United States, Canada, Italy, France, Germany, Singapore, China, South Korea and Japan.

duration:(0:37-17:00)

According to the interview of our group, we summarized the richness of the global culture of Black Cat.

Black cats have formed a pluralistic symbolic meaning in various cultures around the world, carrying elements of good luck, misfortune or mystery. These beliefs are deeply rooted in cultural traditions and inject diversity into individual ideas and social attitudes. Whether it is a word of mouth or a cultural event, the black cat is often regarded as a symbol of good luck. In some places, these cats are regarded as a harbinger of good luck and are closely related to local traditions and celebrations. The mysterious atmosphere of the black cat is also believed to have a positive impact on the daily life of individuals. However, in contrast, historical traditions and superstitions have led some cultures to perceive black cats as omens of misfortune. Negative portrayals in literature and media have further fueled misunderstandings, depicting them as ominous beings. Yet, some literary works attempt to shatter these stereotypes by presenting black cats in a positive light.

4:Collection of cultural relics:

week 5:

In the fifth week, we submitted our preliminary homework.

Preliminary submission of homework

In the teacher's answer, teacher, let's connect the collection of cultural relics according to the conclusions of the interview in slides 19 and 20, and then let's join the project of how the black cat symbolizes cross-cultural latitude to solve the continuous output of sensitivity.

Final submission:

Week 6 | Cultural Relics Analysis and Final Idea

There is no big problem with our design. We only need to link the collected design and the final visual design. According to the survey results of Google Forms, most of them chose the design package as the final design. During the consultation, we decided to create the product of the design package for visual design.

Under the guidance of the lecturer, we are moving towards visual design. Under the guidance of the lecturer, we have designed more design drafts. So we have produced a variety of design products for black cat bags.

From there we had divided our task for each group member for our assignment. Each group member's task is as follows:
Akira - Find and Contact Printing Services, Presentation Video
Johanna - Find and Contact Printing Services, Slide Preparation, Presentation Video, Video Editing
Bei Ni -  Bag Types Design and Sketch
Jia Qi - Bag Types Design and Sketch
Sheng Xiao - Bag Types Design and Sketch
Jia Yi - Bag Types Design and Sketch

Draft design:

We decided to explored a bag design that could be more different and be able to hold more load compare to the first and second design, so we have reference the travel bag design and make a little bit of change on the shape and design

the link for the presentation

week7The final project:Visual design

Visual design:My team member yangjiayi-wangshengxiao and I used several bags designed by the black cat. We will reflect them on the canvas bag.

Finally, the first design draft was selected as the final design and sent to the factory for production.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 1
In the first week, the teacher explained the learning tasks and scoring standards of this semester online. The lecturer introduced us to the sensitivity of cross-cultural design, and gathered examples of white culture in China and tattoo culture in Japan.

WEEK 3
In the third week, the teacher assigned us a group and told us that we were going to do some tasks about cross-cultural design.

WEEK 5
In the fifth week, teacher, let's design black cats according to the interview in the slide, contact the sensitivity of cross-cultural design, and offline on Friday, let's continue to draw a draft of the design bag according to the selected theme, and draw different styles of black cat bags.

WEEK 6
The teacher asked us to open a social account to sell. We will print about 100 finished products for our bags, and then sell them on a social account.

          Reflection

Experience
One of the most memorable experiences in our cross-cultural design project was immersing ourselves in the local black cat designs within our community. It was fascinating to explore and analyze the diverse styles of these designs and to discover the talented local designers behind them. This opportunity provided invaluable insights into a visual culture that was previously unfamiliar to us.

Initially, our team struggled with varying interpretations of the project requirements, leaving us uncertain about our direction. However, with guidance from our instructor and several discussions, we eventually clarified our objectives and made significant progress in our proposal and data collection. While we encountered challenges during the final stage of visual design, we collaborated diligently to integrate black cat designs into our product promotion.

Observation
Through observation, we noticed that black cat designs encompassed a wide range of colors, shapes, and cultural symbols, providing vibrant visual experiences that reflect the unique cultural characteristics of our community. Additionally, presentations from other groups offered fresh perspectives and innovative ideas, enriching our understanding of cross-cultural design.

Discovery
In my opinion, black cat designs serve not only as artistic expressions but also as reflections of culture and society. Through research and practice, I realized the rich historical and cultural significance embedded within these designs, warranting deeper exploration and understanding. Effective teamwork and communication were crucial throughout the project, particularly in our interactions with senior students, which allowed us to approach problem-solving more comprehensively and achieve better outcomes.
