LECTURES

Week 5

In week 5, we learned about animation techniques. We watched a lecture video on 4 great motion graphics techniques.

4 Great Motion Graphics Techniques

After that, we had a tutorial session with Mr Fauzi on adding transitions with camera in Adobe After Effects.

1. Create composition in Photoshop or Illustrator
2. Import to After Effects
3. Create new composition
4. Add camera and null object (controller)
5. Connect the layers to controller and controller to camera
6. Can play around with the layers by adding depth to them using position
7. Can add text (as a new composition)
8. Can add motion blur after finalising everything

Week 5 Practical - ADVANCED LAYERS, KEYFRAMING, BASIC ANIMATION

For this week's practical, we are required to create a basic animation using advance layers and keyframing. I first created a composition in Photoshop. I cut out the subjects from the original images and arranged them into different layers in Photoshop.

Week 6:Choose a channel + make Moodboard, Style Guide, preliminary sketch
For this project, we were tasked with creating a short channel bumper for a channel or brand of our choice. A channel bumper is a brief, engaging video (typically 5 to 15 seconds) that acts as a visual identity piece for a channel—serving as an intro, outro, or intermission clip between content.

Concept Theme:
YSL Beauty is the representative of luxury makeup in the world. Its visual language has always been based on black gold, conveying the brand spirit of boldness, sexiness, and nobility. This project aims to design a 10-15 second channel bumper video for the YSL Beauty channel, presenting brand charm and attracting the audience to the channel content.
Theme Name: Dare to Glow
Keywords:
luxury, sexy, sense of power, abstract, sense of rhythm, visual impact
Conceptual description:
With "Dare to Glow" as the core concept, through liquid metal, lip gloss strokes, faint light particles, and other elements, combined with rhythmic music, it creates a tempting atmosphere of YSL makeup. The Bumper video will show the charm of women in light and shadow and convey the power of makeup in an abstract way.

Week 7 Complete the split-frame

Animation style: flowing liquid, particle scattering, metal deformation, rhythm matching music beat
LOGO usage suggestions: black background gold characters, gradual fading/particle reconstruction form entry
A drop of metal lip oil flows into the black background, slowly fainting.

Feedback

Week 7
Project what you have to do; you have to reveal.
- The brand is OK.
- Animate the logo or the text; you can find a vector version of the logo.
- Do some masking, and after that, once you're done, put the text.
- Maybe you can dress up your lips to make. Make it glow. Zoom in or zoom out.

Week 9
- Good but too slow
- Remove the masking and the zoom-in or zoom-out transform.
- Remember to add audio

Feedback

Week 7  Reflection

In Week 7, I presented my initial concept using YSL Beauty as the selected brand. The lecturer approved of the brand direction and encouraged me to:

  • Animate the logo or text using a vector version

  • Explore masking techniques for creative transitions

  • Enhance the visual of the lips, possibly by adding glow effects and experimenting with zoom-in or zoom-out animations

This feedback helped me understand the importance of motion rhythm and focal points in animation. I began experimenting with light effects, smooth logo reveals, and transitions to embody the luxurious feel of the YSL brand.

Week 9  Reflection

During the Week 9 review, the lecturer mentioned that while the visuals were well-developed, the overall pacing of the animation felt too slow. Key suggestions included:

  • Removing masking and zoom animations that slowed down the visual tempo

  • Incorporating audio to complement and uplift the motion

From this, I realized the importance of maintaining a concise and impactful rhythm in short-format motion graphics. I revised my animation by trimming scenes, removing unnecessary transitions, and syncing it with music that added energy and polish.

Final Thoughts

This project taught me how to balance visual elegance and narrative clarity in motion design. I deepened my understanding of brand aesthetics, animation principles, and how to craft a channel bumper that reflects both identity and emotion through sound and motion.

Reflection

Working on the YSL Beauty motion graphics project was a rewarding experience that helped me grow creatively. My aim was to create a channel bumper that captured YSL’s bold and luxurious identity. I chose the theme “Bold Elegance” and used a black and gold colour palette to reflect the brand’s glamour and confidence.

Through this project, I realised how important it is to plan carefully and pay attention to every detail, even in a short video. From building the mood board to polishing the final animation, I learned how motion graphics can powerfully communicate a brand’s story. This experience strengthened both my design thinking and my ability to express brand identity through movement and sound.
