Asynchronous Class Materials

Three Act Structure
  1. Act 1- Setup
  2. Act 2- Confrontation
  3. Act 3- Resolution
An important takeway of the 3 act is understanding that one event must lead to another and then to another, this unifies actions and meaning and creates the semblance of a story.

Act 1- Setup
The first act establishes the protagonist, their world, and the situation they find themselves in. This act typically ends with an inciting incident, which sets the story in motion and creates a problem that the protagonist must solve. The inciting incident can be a positive or negative event, but it must be significant enough to disrupt the protagonist's world and force them to take action.
Act 2- Confrontation
The second act is the longest and most complex of the three acts. It's where the protagonist faces a series of obstacles and challenges as they work towards their goal. This act is often divided into two parts: the first half, where the protagonist makes progress towards their goal, and the second half, where they encounter setbacks and complications. The second act typically ends with a major turning point, where the protagonist faces a significant setback or crisis that forces them to reevaluate their approach.

Act 3- Resolution
The Resolution The third act is where the story reaches its climax and resolution. The protagonist must confront their final challenge or conflict and overcome it in order to achieve their goal. The climax is the most intense and dramatic part of the story, where the stakes are highest and the tension is at its peak. The resolution, on the other hand, is the denouement, where loose ends are tied up, and the protagonist's journey comes to a satisfying conclusion.

Quiz

Let's start with the nature of sound. Sound is actually the vibration of air molecules that stimulate our eardrums. We analyze sound in several stages. The first is called production, then transmission, and finally perception.

fig1.1

Sound energy is transmitted in the form of sound waves. There are two main types of waves: transverse waves and longitudinal waves. In transverse waves, particles vibrate at right angles to the direction. In longitudinal waves, the waves vibrate parallel to the direction of the sound. Wavelength is the distance between two consecutive presses. The number of waves passing through a point in 1 second is called frequency. The rebound of sound is called echo.

Week3

Mr. Martin continues to show us videos to help us better understand the three-act framework.
We must blend the sound components below to create an audio environment for the audio dubbing exercise that both enhances the action and draws in the audience:
Talk or Conversation
Sound effects * one character, single track * no requirement for music
Audio track: one character, one track, and three dialogue tracks.
Three tracks are for ambiance sound and four are for sound effects.

There is 2 types of sound effects:
Hard Sound effects: Specific sounds that are added to a film to enhance a particular action or event, such as a door creaking, glass breaking, or a gunshot.

Ambient effects: Background noise in a film, such as traffic, wind, or crowd noise, that helps to create a sense of environment and atmosphere.Edit voice from female to male, male to female, human to cute animal/adult to kid:Premiere Pro → Audio Effects → Pitch Shifter → Semi tones.

Volume:
Asynchoronous class materials

For sound effect, we need to find it online. The audio need to be faded in and faded out.

Dialogue: between -6dB & -12dB

Ambience: below -20dB

Hard sound effects: Depend.

StudioBinder emphasizes the storyboard’s purpose in pre-visualizing a film, explaining how it communicates camera angles, transitions, character actions, and scene flow to directors and teams. It’s a pre-production tool that improves efficiency during shoots by aligning everyone on the project’s vision.

Milanote focuses more on the how-to process, giving a practical, step-by-step guide for creating a storyboard. It involves breaking down the script, mapping key scenes, sketching shots, and using digital tools for seamless collaboration, making it easier to visualize creative ideas.

  • EXERCISES : Audio Fundamentals

    Week1
    .Project 1 Exercise 1, Audio Dubbing (15%):

    Complete the spreadsheet breakdown

Record all dialogues with your phone (import to premiere)

Prepare all hard sound effects (import to premiere)

Prepare ambient sound (import to premiere)

Place audio files on timeline and sync it with video.

We were asked to record a silent sequence for this movie,We need to analyze what sounds will appear in this video and look for specific sound effects on the website. We need to accurately fix the sounds on the audio track, corresponding to our own dubbing, and ensure that they are synchronized with the video without errors.

Find the pitch in the effect, and then edit it in the effect control. Adjust the male voice through chromatic scale, cents, and splicing frequency. My reference values are chromatic scale -5, cents -5, and the splicing frequency is 100HZ, so Sounds more masculine.

I've divided this exercise into 3 parts - hard sound effects, ambient sounds and dialog recordings.

     Fig.1.3Female voice

We were asked to record a piece of text, and later the teacher would teach us how to dub the voice in class.

    Fig.1.5 Background sound

In last week's class, we asked the group to complete the spreadsheet segmentation. We looked for the background sound of this video and some scene sounds.

    Fig.1.6 Hard Sound Effect

Because I collected the background sound and the sound of the scene well last week, I can use PR editing more quickly. I just need to add the voices of the remaining boys and girls to edit.

    Tasks of the 7th week

    1. Project 1: Sound shaping. The slide provides the step-by-step workflow in Adobe Audition.

Record your own voice for 5 seconds to submit exercise 2.

    Telephone voice.

The voice came from the closet.

    The sound of the toilet/bathroom.

    Underground cave.

    Alien/Orc Voice

Submission date: 11:59 p.m. on November 10, 2024. Please submit it to the project 1 folder of your google drive and upload your blog.

    Step:

We were asked to record the sound for 5 seconds, and then we recorded the Beijing authentic words, and then our first task was to make the sound effect of the phone sound.

    fig 1.2 Telephone sound production

Second, we want to make a sound in the cabinet, and then we choose the effect of the dry small room in the reverberation to adjust.
fig 1.3 The effect of the sound coming out of the cabinet

I still chose to choose the sound of bathroom two from the reverb, and then adjusted the parameters to add echo.
fig 1.4 The sound effect in the bathroom

Fourth, we need to make an underground cave sound, and then I chose the Star Aviation Maze in the stereo, and added the three-dimensional sound effect period to be more in line with

fig 1.6 Add three-dimensional sound effects
The last one is that we need to make an alien sound effect. I chose the sound effect of Mars, and then added a heavy metal sound effect to make it more in line with expectations.

    Reflection

Voice acting has provided several important lessons. It emphasizes the importance of vocal expression, allowing actors to communicate emotion and character through tone, pitch, and rhythm. The art of voice acting requires more than just reading lines; it involves interpreting scripts and embodying characters through the voice, which adds depth to performances.

Additionally, technical knowledge plays a crucial role in creating a professional sound. Learning about microphone techniques, breath control, and sound editing enhances the overall quality of voice work. The process of mastering both the creative and technical aspects of voice acting enriches one’s understanding of sound production and performance.
