Week 1:

Freeze action is a traditional film technique, which was originally used to give the impression of movement to the illustrated characters. The camera will stop and start repeatedly, and many frames will be combined to create a fascinating short story.

The reason for the freeze action

1) Tactile aesthetics

Stop-motion animation has a unique handmade feeling, which is difficult to achieve in digital animation. The texture of the real material brings a different feeling to the final product and creates a unique aesthetic.

2) Flexibility

It allows animators to manipulate any physical objects, including clay, paper, or other objects, which can be used to create visual effects in freeze-motion videos. This versatility allows the expansion of creativity.

3) Visual participation

Stop-motion animation has a visually unique and often eccentric style that can make it stand out from other forms of animation or live-action video. Slightly jerky or "lagging" action adds personality to the animation.

Mr. Martin instructed us to watch stop-motion animated short films and share our favourite short films.

Week 10 Practical: Stop-motion editing workflow

Please download week 10 stop motion footages (phone & dslr) into your harddrive for editing.

Editing software: Premiere Pro, After Effects.

Week11-14 Week location: E1.01 Photo studio

From the 11th to the 14th week, we will complete the final shooting. The teacher asked us to choose a good partner, and then plan our story section.

exercises

Before the final shooting, we did exercises on stop-motion animation.

fig1.1Group allocation
In the week7, the teacher divided us into groups of four to five to shoot stop-motion animations, prepare materials and make products, and prepare for the next week's school shooting. My group members and I bought a series of materials such as clay, cardboard, scissors and glue at a nearby DIY store

fig1.2Task assignment

In this homework, we need to divide into two groups and shoot paper-cutting, stop-motion animation and clay stop-motion animation. I chose paper-cutting stop-motion animation and took on the position of art director.

Reflection

This module has been a brand-new experience for me, as it introduced me to working with video and sound. Learning to use Adobe Premiere Pro for video editing and color correction, as well as Adobe Audition for audio editing, has been both challenging and exciting.

At first, I found these software tools quite complex due to their vast features and intricate interfaces. However, through consistent tutorials and hands-on practice, I gradually became familiar with their core functionalities. I came to realize the immense potential these tools offer—they not only enhance the quality of my work but also allow me to express my creativity in more refined and advanced ways. Once mastered, these tools open up countless possibilities for creating professional and impactful projects.

This module has also emphasized the importance of paying close attention during tutorials. Missing even small details can lead to confusion later, especially when dealing with the technical aspects of video and audio editing. For instance, precise adjustments on the timeline in video editing or fine-tuning audio effects in sound editing require patience and a meticulous approach. Although the learning process can sometimes feel overwhelming, seeing the final polished results is incredibly rewarding and fulfilling.

Additionally, this experience has deepened my understanding of the balance between technology and artistry. While technical skills are essential, creating truly impactful works requires integrating creativity and emotion. Mastering these tools is just the beginning; enhancing my aesthetic sensibility will be equally important for producing works that resonate with the audience.

Overall, this module has not only improved my technical skills but also taught me the value of focus and persistence when learning something new. Despite the challenges, I have enjoyed pushing myself out of my comfort zone and look forward to applying these skills in future projects to create more polished, expressive, and meaningful works.
