As a student specializing in immersive design, this semester marked my first experience writing a research paper. My chosen topic, The Impact of Immersive Design on Fashion Shows, aimed to explore how technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) are transforming fashion presentations and audience experiences. Throughout this process, I not only gained valuable knowledge and skills but also encountered numerous challenges that prompted critical reflection and problem-solving.
Knowledge and Skills Acquired
One of the most important lessons I learned was the significance of crafting a clear and specific problem statement. Initially, the scope of my research was too broad, which resulted in a vague problem statement and hindered the depth of my analysis. Through discussions with my lecturer, Mr. Mohd Asrizal Razali, I realized the necessity of narrowing down the research focus. His emphasis on clarity and specificity helped me refine my research question and align it with the study's objectives. This experience underscored the importance of logical rigor and targeted inquiry in academic research.
During the literature review stage, I developed the ability to critically evaluate, synthesize, and apply existing studies. Given the novelty of immersive design within the fashion industry, directly relevant literature was limited. To address this, I adopted a multidisciplinary approach, drawing insights from fields such as interactive design, experiential marketing, and digital media. This broadened perspective enriched my literature review and improved my capacity for cross-disciplinary thinking.
In the survey and data analysis phases, I honed my skills in designing research instruments and interpreting results. The questionnaire not only yielded sufficient responses but also revealed unexpected trends, such as age-based differences in the reception of immersive technologies. These findings added depth to my analysis, reinforcing the importance of examining diverse perspectives within research.
Challenges and Solutions
One of the primary challenges I faced was sourcing relevant literature in a niche research area. To overcome this, I employed two strategies: first, expanding the scope of search terms to include related concepts such as "user experience design" and "visual communication"; second, reinterpreting findings from adjacent fields to construct a more comprehensive theoretical framework.
Another significant challenge was ensuring the scientific validity and reliability of my research tools. During the questionnaire design phase, I sought feedback from my lecturer and peers to refine the wording of questions and minimize potential biases. In the data analysis stage, I utilized statistical software and visualization tools to ensure the accuracy of my findings and improve the clarity of my presentation.
Improvements for Future Research
Reflecting on this experience, I have identified several areas for improvement in future research endeavors:
- Strengthening Theoretical Foundations: Engage more deeply with relevant theories and ensure a stronger alignment between theoretical frameworks and research design.
- Diversifying Research Methods: Combine quantitative surveys with qualitative methods, such as case studies or interviews, to provide a more holistic understanding of the topic.
- Enhancing Presentation Skills: Develop more effective ways of visually presenting findings, such as employing advanced data visualization techniques to make research outcomes more compelling.
Conclusion
This research journey has significantly enhanced my understanding of the intersection between immersive design and fashion, while also improving my critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Most importantly, it has taught me that academic research is not just about accumulating knowledge but also about cultivating the ability to think critically and adapt to challenges. I extend my sincere gratitude to Mr. Mohd Asrizal Razali for his guidance and encouragement, which have been invaluable in this process. Moving forward, I am eager to deepen my exploration in this field and achieve even more meaningful research outcomes.
