Narrative Design in 360 Video

4 Acts in 360 Video
Act 1: Exposition
- Viewers adapt to the environment and identify their role.
Act 2: Immersion
- Viewers immerse themselves in the story world.
Act 3: Fulfilment
- Full immersion creates a psychological impact on the viewers.
Act 4: Retrospection
- Viewers reflect and conclude the experience in story form.

Case Study of 360 Proposal Design

Project

Project 3
For this project, we will learn to create a proposal for 360 video. Mr Martin shows us a short film that is made from the seniors, and we need to use it as our inspiration to create our own ideas to film in 360 video and write the proposal.
Below is the short firm:

This short film is about a girl living alone in her apartment who unexpectedly finds herself in a terrifying situation. Originally inspired by the idea of a nightmare that becomes real, we realised that in 360° video, it’s difficult to signal clearly to viewers when a dream begins or ends. As Mr Martin mentioned, dreams in 360° can confuse the audience because the immersive format doesn’t naturally indicate transitions between dream and reality.

So, we reworked our concept to instead focus on the fear and vulnerability—but in a more grounded, realistic context.
Through discussions, we developed a story that effectively utilises the 360° immersive space to transport the audience into a suspenseful and intimate experience of fear: a young woman who thinks she is safe in the comfort of her home but somehow becomes the target of a strange man who has a key to her apartment.

The story consists of four scenarios that escalate from her thinking she is safe in her home to a terrifying home invasion or murder. We use warm lighting and disturbing contrasts (rain outside, soft pajamas and relaxing) to create an illusion of safety, which is then suddenly shattered. 360° views allow the viewer to feel as if they are in her apartment, powerless to do anything about it, but fully immersed in her growing panic.

Final Proposal

Feedback

Mr Martin asked us about Scene 2: how do we make the audience feel that “home” is a safe place? We considered the visual atmosphere, lighting design, the character’s emotions, and the overall warm tone to create a sense of safety.

Regarding Floor Plan 1, Mr Martin pointed out that in Scene 1, the girl took too long to walk to the door. Therefore, we revised Floor Plan 2 (Scene 2); we shortened that segment.
And in order to hint to the audience, we modified scene 1 into scene 2 and then added scene 1 to become an outdoor scene to set a hint.

Reflection

In Project 3, I learnt a lot about how to tell stories through 360° video. Mr Martin explained that this format is different from normal videos—we have to let the audience feel the story, not just watch it. The audience becomes part of the experience, which makes the storytelling more immersive but also more challenging.

One of the biggest difficulties I faced was that the video we were given as a reference was a normal, traditional film. I had to transform that into a 360° experience, which meant I needed to think about many extra things—like how to guide the viewer’s eyes, where to place the action, and how to use sound and lighting to help tell the story from all directions.

This project taught me that making a 360° video needs more than just creativity—it also requires careful planning and thinking from the audience’s perspective. It was a tough project.
