4. Reflection
Experience
During this module, I learned how to conduct an independent design research project from proposal development to data analysis and discussion. This process was challenging, especially at the beginning, as academic writing and research structuring were not my strongest skills. I spent a significant amount of time reviewing literature related to immersive design, fashion shows, and audience experience. Understanding how to evaluate sources, extract relevant theories, and relate them to my research topic required patience and repeated revision.
In addition, designing and distributing a questionnaire, as well as interpreting the responses, was a new experience for me. Organising the data and transforming the findings into meaningful analysis helped me better understand how research supports design thinking. Although the research process was time-consuming, it strengthened my ability to work independently and systematically.
Observation
One key observation throughout this module was the importance of consistency, planning, and attention to detail. Dissertation research cannot be completed in a short period; instead, it requires continuous effort and structured progress. I noticed that breaking the research into smaller tasks—such as literature review, methodology, data analysis, and discussion—made the workload more manageable and reduced stress.
Another important observation was the need for clarity and consistency in academic writing. Feedback from the lecturer highlighted the importance of using consistent terminology, clear formatting, and original analysis based on my own research process. This helped me understand that academic writing is not only about content, but also about structure, logic, and presentation.
Findings
Through this research project, I realised that design research involves more than visual creativity; it also requires critical thinking, data interpretation, and theoretical grounding. Analysing both quantitative survey data and qualitative feedback allowed me to understand how immersive design influences audience engagement, emotional connection, and narrative perception in fashion shows.
The literature review helped me identify gaps between theory and practice, while the research findings enabled me to form my own perspective on immersive fashion experiences. I also learned the importance of revising and refining work based on feedback, as this process significantly improved the quality and clarity of my dissertation.
Overall, this module enhanced my research skills, critical thinking ability, and academic writing confidence. It has also helped me better understand how research can inform future design practice and creative decision-making.
